Celebrating Saint Lucia’s Independence Day

The original inhabitants called the island Iouanalao, and later Hewanorra.

The first inhabitants were the native Awawaks, who settled the island between 200 and 400 CE. At the time of European conquest, the island was inhabited by native Caribs.

Diverse colonial influences shaped Saint Lucia’s path to independence.

Control of the island changed hands multiple times between the French and British, which is reflected in the island’s diverse culture and heritage. The peaceful transition to independence began a new chapter for Saint Lucians, one where they could chart their own course and embrace their unique identity.
