Episode 1: Dr. Kristian Karlson (March 26, 2024)
Kristian Bernt Karlson is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His research centers on inequalities in education, social mobility, and statistical methods. He has published widely on these topics, including in some of the leading journals in the field. Karlson got his Ph.D. in 2013, and was appointed tenure in 2016. During his Ph.D. studies, he was a visiting Fulbright fellow at Yale University. He is also the winner of significant early career awards from the American Sociological Association and the European Academy of Sociology.
Dr. Karlson is the author of a recent study published in the American Journal of Sociology, titled “Black-White Trends in Intergenerational Educational Mobility: A Positional Analysis,” which we featured on our blog. Click here to read more.
Episode 2: Dr. Guadalupe Marquez-Velarde and Dr. Christopher Rider (April 2, 2024)
Dr. Guadalupe Marquez-Velarde is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Utah State University. She earned her PhD in Sociology from Texas A&M University. Dr. Marquez-Velarde’s main research interests are population health, intersectionality, and broader issues of racial inequality; her expertise includes Immigrant, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ health, as well as demography.
Dr. Marquez-Verlarde is the lead author of an article in the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, titled “The Paradox of Integration: Racial Composition of NFL Positions from 1960 to 2020.” She will be joined on the podcast by Dr. Christopher Rider from the University of Michigan, who is the lead author of an article in the American Journal of Sociology, titled “Racial Disparity in Leadership: Evidence of Valuative Bias in the Promotions of National Football League Coaches” for a discussion of racial bias in the NFL. Episode 3: Dr. Adel Daoud (April 9, 2024)
Dr. Adel Daoud is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Analytical Sociology, Linköping University, and an Affiliate Associate Professor in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for the Social Sciences, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Dr. Daoud studies the impact of economic, political, and natural shocks on child poverty globally, revolving around the question of why societies often value financial resources over peoples’ health or lives. Another focal point is how families and their children suffer because of dysfunctional governments, institutions, or policies.
Dr. Daoud is the lead author of a recent study published in Social Science Research, titled “The Impact of Austerity on Children: Uncovering Effect Heterogeneity by Political, Economic, and Family Factors in Low- and Middle-Income Countries,” which we featured on our blog. Click here to read more.
Episode 4: Dr. Jaclyn Wong (April 16, 2024)
Dr. Jaclyn S. Wong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and a Faculty Affiliate of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of South Carolina. She received her PhD in Sociology with a graduate certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies from the University of Chicago. Her research uses qualitative and quantitative methods to examine gender inequalities in paid and unpaid work within and between couples and families over the adult life course.
She has published articles in outlets like Gender & Society, Journal of Family Theory and Review, Journal of Family Issues, and the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences. Her book, Equal Partners? How Dual-Professional Couples Make Career, Relationship, and Family Decisions is now available from the University of California Press.
Dr. Wong is the lead author of a recent study published in Gender & Society, titled “The Myth of Mutuality: Decision-Making, Marital Power, and the Persistence of Gender Inequality,” which we featured on our blog. Click here to read more.
